The Dead I Know by Scot Gardner

This is a Youth Fiction book first published in 2011.

Scot Gardner is one of my favourite Australian authors and I have loved his previous books: ‘Happy as Larry”, “One Dead seagull”, “Burning Eddy” and “Gravity”

“The Dead I Know” doesn’t disappoint!

Aaron Rowe, teenage sleepwalker, lives in the local caravan park where he has to deal with thugs, his own demons and his new job as a trainee funeral director.

A terrific read – aimed at youth – but if you’re a bit older than that and love a good YF read, grab a copy of this book as well as the others that Scot Gardner has written.

Definitely a 3 star read.

The Little Old Lady Who Broke All The Rules by Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg

This novel is by a Swedish author, translated from the Swedish by Rod Bradbury and published in 2013.

The translation works really well and I found this book to be a fun, quirky, feel-good story.

The story is about 79 year old Martha Andersson who dreams of escaping her nursing home and living life to the full in a much better place. With her four oldest friends, she forms a gang known as “The League of Pensioners” and together they plot their incredible criminal journey, complete with Zimmer Frames!

Love, laughter, friendship and intrigue – this is a read that will be keep you guessing at the ingenuity of Martha and friends.

3 stars for this one!

The Templars by Piers Paul Read

The book I’ve recently read is “The Templars” by Piers Paul Read. It is a history of the Knights Templar and describes the history of the order, the religious fervour and times of the Middle Ages. I found this book interesting because I have travelled through the routes of The Templars and the illustrations and photos of many castles, fortresses and churches made the history even more descriptive.

many thanks  to Jeff for this review!

The Girl in the Painted Caravan – Memories of a Romany Childhood by Eva Petulengro

I love a good memoir and this one does not disappoint! The author was born into a Romany gypsy family in 1939 and travelled with her family throughout England in their painted caravan. Eva tells a wonderful story of her life, her family and friends and a lifestyle that is so different to what many of us would ever encounter. Her story is filled with love and some heartbreak but is fantastically engaging and thoroughly enjoyable.

definitely a 3 star read!

The Thorn Birds

The Thorn Birds.jpegI reread The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough over the long weekend. It still made me cry! The never-ending love which was held in their hearts and then there was the pride and pursuit of power and success which kept them apart until the very end. PS. I cried more when I watched to dvd especially at the funeral of their son. Sorry I haven’t submitted a new book.

Reckoning by Magda Szubanski

I admit I am a Magda fan from way back – she is such a wonderful comedienne. Having now just finished her first book, “Reckoning”, I am now an even bigger fan! But seriously, Magda’s memoir is powerfully moving and totally captivating. Magda gives her reader a wonderful insight into her parents and their lives growing up in Poland and Scotland, her own family life as the youngest of three children and her personal story of her professional and private life

“Reckoning” is a beautifully written book, very easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable. Definitely a 3 star book!

The White Queen by Philippa Gregory

A historical novel about the War of the Roses (Yorks and Lancasters) in England from the viewpoint of the White Queen, Elizabeth Woodville who married King Edward IV of York. You come to understand the determination, demands, rivalry, use of mythology and religion of Queen Elizabeth to protect her children, especially her sons. I enjoyed the historical setting of the novel. The disappearance of her sons became the mystery known as the missing Princes in the Tower of London.
